Gov't distances from Lacson handcuffs issue
By She Caguimbal-Torres

MALACAÑANG denied Tuesday being involved in the resurfacing of a handcuffs supplier of the PNP whom the camp of Sen. Panfilo Lacson described as another "attack dog" of the administration to cover up the Jose Pidal controversy.

Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the row between Lacson and businesswoman Blanquita Pelaez is an issue that neither concerns nor involves the Palace or President Arroyo.

Pelaez was supposed to supply 41,297 pieces of handcuffs to the PNP in 1999 but Lacson blocked it prompting her to file charges against the senator.

"This is something between Ms. Pelaez and Mr. Lacson and the Palace is not interfering with this situation. We do not wish to comment on this issue," Bunye added.

Lito Banayo, spokesman of Lacson, said Pelaez came out in a press conference Monday that was organized by the alleged handlers of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo and was even provided security personnel identified with the administration.

He added that Pelaez is recycling the handcuff issue at the behest of the First Gentleman to discredit Lacson.

He also described Pelaez as the same person who worked with former military intelligence chief Brig. Gen. Victor Corpus in looking into alleged bank accounts of Lacson abroad.
