Verification of voters in NCR gains pace
THE verification of voter's registration in several areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) is improving.
This, as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Metro Manila validated 34 percent of the estimated 5.2 million voters in Metro Manila within the first two months of the 120 day-registration period.
In a report submitted to Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr.; NCR director Ferdinand T. Rafanan said they were able to validate 1.820 million voters in the metropolis.
Rafanan attributed the increase in the number of voters validating their registration to efforts of the Comelec to install measures that would speed up the voter's list up.
"Before, registration was done in offices of the election officers (EOs) but now an en banc resolution has made it possible for registration to be done in satellite offices in barangays and election assistants already acts as EOs so they (voters) don't have to go to city hall, municipalities for registration," Rafanan said.
He added: "This is a good response to the needs of the applicants because it expands the capability of the EOs."
But if registration in NCR showed signs of improvement, the opposite has happened in other regions because there are areas wherein the voters' validation and registration recorded a low turnout.
A source at the Comelec said the reason for the low turnout is due to the defective data capturing machines used by the Comelec personnel during the list-up of voters.
The source also noted that aside from the defective data capturing machines, there are also other problems being encountered by the applicants like the lack of supplies.
At present, 5 million to 7 million voters of the estimated 43 million voters nationwide have already validated their registration while 500,000 of the expected 2 million new registrants have enlisted.
