CPP-NPA doubts reason for red alert By Miko Santos
THE Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) warned the public Friday against believing the explanations for the imposition of red alert status amid rumors of a coup plot brewing within the military.
In a statement CPP spokesman Gregorio "Ka Roger" Rosal said the citizenry should exercise vigilance at this point: "This is the most probable time that the military will try to seize power from the government."
Rosal said the CPP doubts the statements of Armed Forces Chief Narciso Abaya, that a group of officers have reportedly been inquiring about the military's role should a Constitutional crisis should erupt as a result of the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr.
Rosal described Abaya's reported revelation as "a staged or choreographed scenario-building move."
He said the military might launch a coup attempt if the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide proceeds.
Meanwhile, the CPP also warned politicians who intend to campaign in areas controlled by the New People's Army (NPA) to pay them a "permit to rally" fee.
"It's no secret. It shows that politicians recognize the influence of the revolutionary movement," Rosal said.
"It's the legitimate right of the government formed by the people in the countryside," said Rosal.
Rosal said the money would be used to fund the NPA guerrilla campaign and "day-to-day operations."
"It's not cheap to mount a revolution," he said, adding that their comrades spent a lot on cellular phones.
Rosal said the NPA would not allow "enemies of the people" to campaign in areas they control even if they offer to pay for the "permit to campaign."
He also said the NPA is training minors as guerrilla fighters but only if they were born in guerrilla camps. He denied that the NPA is recruiting minors.
