31st Archbishop of Manila installed By Miko Santos
ARCHBISHOP Gaudencio P. Rosales was installed as the 31st Archbishop of Manila as Jaime Cardinal Sin formally stepped down Friday with a plea to Filipino politicians to be more responsible in their jobs.
In the liturgical installation rites held at the Manila Cathedral, Archbishop Rosales was received by President Macapagal-Arroyo, Former President Corazon Aquino, Senate President Franklin Drilon, House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., and some 600 priests from Manila, Bukidnon and Batangas and around 100 bishops from all over the country.
Cardinal Sin, in his farewell speech, urged the country to support Rosales, whom he said has "clarity of vision and piety of heart."
Rosales's installation came two months after the Vatican made the announcement last September that the Holy See already accepted Cardinal Sin's resignation, appointing Rosales, outgoing bishop of Lipa City, as the new archbishop of Manila.
Rosales, who has spent most of his ministry in the provinces, said earlier he would have preferred a quiet and simple reception for him in Manila.
Rosales, a known advocate for the environment, was last assigned in Manila as auxiliary bishop in 1982. He will replace Jaime Cardinal Sin, who led the archdiocese of Manila for 29 years.
Archbishop-elect Rosales was born on August 10, 1932, in Batangas City, where he served as Lipa archbishop. He was ordained on March 23, 1958 and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Manila by Pope Paul VI on August 12, 1974.
