Suspended mayor accuses Velarde of 'meddling' in case
By Benjamin B. Pulta

A SUSPENDED Metro Manila mayor Monday accused influential religious leader Mike Velarde of securing favors from Malacañang Palace for an in-law.

In an oral argument before the Court of Appeals (CA) 2nd Division, Malabon City Mayor Amado Vicencio said El Shaddai leader Mike Velarde was allegedly behind the suspension order issued against him by Malacañang Palace.

Vicencio said Velarde intervened in behalf of in-law, Malabon Vice Mayoy Jayjay Yambao, the city's acting mayor.

Vicencio is facing an administrative case before the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) filed by Councilors Edilberto Torres and Chiqui Villaurel for alleged irregularities in a contract covering the purchase of a P80-million land in Tanza, Navotas, that will be a relocation site for more than 2,800 dwellers who will be displaced by the Northrail Project.

The Northrail is a project of the government that will extend from Caloocan to Pampanga.

Vicencio is in hot water after giving P12.8 million as down payment for the purchase of the land in Tanza.

Vicencio had approached Navotas Mayor Tobby Tiangco to convince Malacañang's Internal Affairs head Mai-mai Jimenez not to suspend him.

Vicencio earlier failed to obtain a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop his suspension.

In a directive, CA 2nd Division chairman Buenaventura Guerrero gave Vicencio, Torres and Villaruel 15 days to file their respective memorandum and five days to file their reply to the petition for a TRO.
