6 carnappers fall; Unionbank robbery suspect arrested
By Miko Santos

A GROUP of suspected car thieves allegedly shot it out with members of the Western Police District conducting a checkpoint along Osmena highway in San Andres, Manila.

Initial reports said six of the suspects, who were in two separate cars, were killed. They were all taken to the Ospital ng Maynila.

Two of the fatalities were identified as Romeo de los Santos and Senando Lamo based on the driver's licenses recovered from their bodies.

Chief Supt. Ricardo de Leon said police initially chased three of the suspects aboard a maroon Hyundai van that was reported to them as having been carnapped.

The three other suspects riding a white Toyota Tamaraw FX (PCX-777) trailed the Hyundai, de Leon said.

He did not say whether the FX was also stolen.

The fleeing car thieves then exchanged fire with police, de Leon added.

De Leon said the police recovered high-powered guns and grenades from the suspects, prompting investigators to conclude that the group had "other intentions" aside from stealing the car.

De Leon said police gathered a .45 caliber pistol, empty shells of an M-16 rifle and an undetermined number of black bonnets inside the Hyundai van, which had no license plate.

The FX yielded another .45 caliber pistol and masking tape, De Leon added.

De Leon said stolen vehicles have been used in recent kidnapping incidents.

De Leon said police have not determined if the suspects were part of any criminal group.

Meanwhile, Lawmen arrested Wednesday a suspect in the Nov. 24 robbery of a Unionbank branch along Quirino Avenue in Parañaque City.

Supt. Roland Estilles, Parañaque City police director, identified the suspect as Ramil Pacaño, 32. Pacaño was arrested in Pasay City.

A bank security guard identified Pacaño as one of those who broke into the bank and took away P1 million.

Estilles alleged that the suspect is a member of the Kuratong Baleleng group.
