No compromise on 'no-take' policy vs gambling: NCPRO chief
By Miko Santos

NATIONAL Capital Region (NCR) Police Director Ricardo de Leon ordered his five district directors and 37 station commanders to strictly adhere to the "no-take" policy of the PNP on illegal gambling.

De Leon issued the order amid reports that illegal gambling, particularly jueteng, has flourished in Metro Manila in the past months.

He denied that regional directors of the NCRPO and Police Regional Offices I to V have become instant millionaires after a month in office because of jueteng pay-offs.

"That has always been the perception of the public but it's not true," De Leon said.

De Leon reminded ranking police officials in Metro Manila that illegal gambling is included among heinous crimes in the "three-strike" policy that was ordered by President Arroyo to be strictly implemented.

"Police officials should toe the line because I will not hesitate to relieve them once three heinous crimes, including jueteng raids, take in their area of responsibility," De Leon said.

De Leon also announced that police and military units would continue setting up checkpoints until kidnap gangs and other crime groups have been substantially suppressed.

The security measure has proved to be effective not only against organized crime groups but also against snatchers and pickpockets, De Leon said.

He said there had been no kidnappings or bank robberies since mobile checkpoints were set up four days ago in key parts of Metro Manila.
