Presidential legal counsel quits post

CHIEF Presidential Legal Counsel Avelino Cruz Jr. is the latest Cabinet official to give up his post in the Arroyo administration in anticipation of the May 2004 elections.

Cruz, whose resignation takes effect on Dec. 31, would help the President in her campaign.

In a letter dated Dec. 8, 2003, Cruz thanked Arroyo for the opportunity to serve in government and expressed his continued support to Arroyo.

He would be replaced by lawyer Joe Nathan Tenefrancia, former assistant secretary for legal affairs at the Presidential Management Staff (PMS) office and one of the spokesmen of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo on the Jose Pidal controversy.

Tenefrancia, a senior partner at the Vilaraza and Angangco law office once served as director of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP)-Makati Chapter and secretary of the Law Foundation of Makati.

Tenefrancia, a member of the Philippine Bar Association (PBA), is a law graduate from the University of the Philippines (UP) and a holder of a bachelor's degree on mining engineering.

Cruz' resignation came at heels of the resignation of Trade Sec. Manuel Roxas II who left the Cabinet last Dec. 10 to prepare for his senatorial bid. Another Cabinet official planning to resign is Justice Sec. Simeon Datumanong, who is going for congressman in Maguindanao. SCT
