Arroyo orders DOJ to crack down on obsence mags
By Benjamin B. Pulta

ACTING Justice Sec. Jose Calida Tuesday said President Arroyo ordered the agency to act on the proliferation of obscene publications.

Calida, who is a member of the vote-rich Jesus Is Lord Movement, said the Department of Justice (DOJ) and three non-government organizations (NGOs) have agreed to help each other in the renewed drive against pornographic publications.

The crackdown is centered on the magazines featuring the Viva Hotbabes, a group of starlets.

Calida said Aldo Filomeno of the Philippine Alliance on Anti-Pornography (Paap), Dante Jimenez of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (Vacc) and lawyer Leonard De Vera of Equal Justice for All (E-Just) Tuesday sought the DOJ's assistance in their crusade against pornography.

Calida said magazines featuring the Viva Hot Babes are their targets in the drive against smut.

This, after Calida read an advertisement in local newspapers promoting the magazine "Hot Stuff" that features the group of sexy starlets.

Members of the Viva Hot Babes group are Andrea Del Rosario, Katya Santos, Gwen Garci, Myles Hernandez, Kristine Jaca and Jen Rosendahl. Bold star Maui Taylor was a member of the group.

Calida said the filing of a case against the Viva Hot Babes and other obscene publications is "still in the planning stage."

Cases will be filed and their progress monitored in accordance with a consistent effort against pornography," he added.

He said the DOJ will not hesitate in filing criminal charges against publishers of lewd magazines and tabloids, noting that pornography is penalized under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code.
