Fernando angered by 'inept' QC firemen

METRO Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando castigated Quezon City firemen Tuesday over their alleged inability to control the blaze that burned down a commercial building in the area shortly after midnight.

Fernando said the firefighters were inept in fighting the blaze, which gutted the RF Commercial building.

Fernando got even angrier when he discovered that the firefighters had brought the ladders but chose not to use them.

Fernando needed to call on MMDA trucks with their own ladders to assist the firemen.

There were no reported casualties and no estimated cost of damage.

Meanwhile, a riot erupted in the Batasan Hills area in Quezon City after looters took advantage of a fire that hit a slum area after midnight Tuesday.

People started to rob a nearby liquefied petroleum gas dealer as disgruntled residents pelted them with stones.

Tension subsided when police arrived but another commotion erupted after residents grabbed the hoses of firemen, who arrived at the scene.

Firefighters said the residents wanted them to fight the blaze in their houses first and grabbed their fire hoses. Miko Santos
