Opposition, info tech experts push selective poll automation
By Marie Neri

THE opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP), information technology students from different universities and representatives of the IT Foundation of the Philippines (ITFP) believe that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is not ready to conduct an automated election nationwide.

Thus, they urged the government Wednesday to implement automated canvassing of the elections in selected areas of the country only, as agreed earlier by the bicameral conference committee and the Comelec.

"We are not questioning the implementation of the law (on nationwide automation of the elections) but what we want to emphasize here is that the Comelec is not yet ready. I'd rather see the (nationwide) automation be done in the 2007 (local elections)," said Augusto Lagman, a ranking official of ITFP.

For his part, former Rep. Miguel Romero, KNP spokesman, said if President Arroyo vetoes the resolution on selective automation of the elections next year, Congress will override the veto.

He said Arroyo still has until Jan. 15 to decide if she would veto the resolution.

"Under the law, 30 days after the receipt of the resolution, if the President does not act on it, it becomes a law," Romero said.
