FPJ accepts KNP nomination

MOVIE star Fernando Poe Jr. accepted Monday the nomination of the opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) as their standard-bearer.

"Ako, si Fernando Poe Jr., ay buong pakumbabang kinikilala at tinatanggap ang maging presidential standard-bearer ng Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (I, Fernando Poe Jr., humbly acknowledge and accept being the nomination of the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino as their presidential standard-bearer)," Poe announced in a jam-packed conference room at the Westin Philippine Plaza in Pasay City.

He said "God helped and guided him" in reaching the decision to accept the KNP's nomination while it was his supporters who convinced him to enter into public service.

Poe's acceptance came two weeks after he was nominated by the KNP, which is composed of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), Partido ng Demokratikong Pilipino (PDP)-Laban and Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).

Poe said he has yet to decide when exactly would be file his candidacy before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) but he assured he will do before the end of the month.

Poe has not announced who his runningmate, senatorial slate nor his platform of government.

He also said he was still in the process of talking to his possible running mate. Sens. Loren Legarda, Aquilino Pimentel, Gregorio Honasan, and former Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago were among those earlier reported as being considered for the slot.

When asked what are his criteria in choosing his runningmate, the actor simply said "yun talagang makakatulong sa bansa (someone who can help the country)."

Poe did not include Sen. Panfilo Lacson, another presidential contender, as among those being considered as his runningmate because he believed that Lacson would not slide down.

"It's very true that Senator Lacson will really run for president," he added.

Poe also said he would reveal his platform of government after he finishes consulting other groups. Miko Santos/JPM
