Bro. Eddie’s Bangon Pilipinas party under question
By Marie Neri

NOT only is the candidacy of Jesus Is Lord (JIL) leader Bro. Eddie
Villanueva being questioned but also his political party Bangon Pilipinas.

This, after an investigation conducted by the Commission on Elections
(Comelec) showed that most of the leaders of Bangon Pilipinas Movement political party are bishops and pastors but this still has to be confirmed.

Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. said although the participation of religious groups in politics is not prohibited, they would still want to confirm this.

“There is no prohibition kaya lang baka talagang hindi political
organization ito (but this might not be a political organization). Remember, they are registering the party as a political organization, but the question is, can a religious (group) be as well a political one,” Abalos said.

The Comelec law department who already submitted a short list to the commission en banc. The list did not include Villanueva in the five qualified candidates for president because he has no political party, which is one of the factors, on which the department based its recommendations.

The law department identified President Arroyo, former Education Sec. Raul Roco, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, movie action star Fernando Poe Jr. and businessman Eddie Gil as the five qualified candidates for president.
