Tondo fire displaces 4,500 families

FIRE hit the Baseco compound in Tondo, Manila, after midnight Monday, leaving an estimated 4,500 homeless.

There were no reported casualties in the fire, which reached the highest alert level.

Social and Welfare Sec. Dinky Soliman said volunteers and Manila City Government officials have set up a command center at Baseco to identify the families affected by the fire.

"Many were affected, we have to help each other," Soliman said as she appealed to the public to donate food, potable water and sleeping mats.

Soliman said there were no reported casualties but this may change as social welfare workers account for the fire victims.

The fire quickly spread because firemen were hampered by narrow roads leading to the area.

The fire victims are now housed in various evacuation centers near Baseco. Miko Santos
