The inspiring story of Rio Diaz on MMK

Join the country’s leading primetime drama anthology this Thursday, January 15, as it offers multi-awarded actress Eula Valdez in the inspiring portrait of TV host and cancer warrior Rio Diaz. Another acclaimed actor, Ricky Davao, plays the part of Rio’s husband Charlie Cojuangco in this fantastic new episode.

We all know the story behind the well-loved TV host and former beauty queen Rio Diaz. Known as the youngest sister of the beauteous Diaz clan, which counts a Miss Universe, Rio’s elder sister Gloria Diaz, among their number.

Rio was flying high in the late 1990s, juggling her commitment as a host of ABS-CBN’s popular cooking show Sarap TV with her duties as vice-mayor of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental and her career as a dedicated mother and wife to her husband, congressman Charlie Cojuangco.

But all of that changed quite suddenly in 1998, as a routine checkup Rio underwent for her stomach pains unearthed a heartbreaking discovery: she was already suffering from stage 4 colon cancer without her knowledge.

And because stage 4 meant that her cancer growths were already very extensive, the doctor decided to tell her she only had a few months to live.

Rio had a hard time accepting the fact. “I kept asking God for a sign to explain why this happened. I kept begging the Lord to show me He was in control,” says Rio. “I needed Him to tell me there had been a mistake. What I realized was that God was sending me a bright-red neon message with my cancer, one I had to figure out on my own!”

How did Rio cope with the shocking changes that her life has undergone? And where did she get her resources for her beliefs?

Learn it all from this week’s episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya, airing on January 15.
