SC orders oral arguments on LDP row

THE feud between the camps of opposition presidential candidates Fernando Poe Jr. and Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson may be resolved following a ruling by the Supreme Court (SC) to require the two camps in the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) to argue their case before the High Tribunal on Wednesday next week.

In a resolution released Wednesday, the High Court, through Assistant Clerk of Court Luisa Villarama, ordered the two factions of the opposition party to argue their case before the SC en banc in oral arguments at 2 p.m. on January 21.

The resolution also required the Lacson camp under LDP secretary-general, Makati Rep. Agapito Aquino, "to comment thereon within a non-extendible period of five days from notice."

Poe's bloc in LDP earlier questioned before the SC the Commission on Elections (Comelec) decision to allow the Lacson bloc to nominate candidates in the May 2004 elections.

In a 34-page petition before the SC, the Angara Wing, through LDP general counsel Demaree JB Raval and John Lamarenzo, urged the High Court to order the Comelec to "recognize only those LDP certificates of candidacy to which are attached certificates of nomination executed by officers of the LDP duly authorized in writing by (LDP chair Edgardo) Angara for elective positions."

Lacson earlier said Angara's move was unconstructive and “highly divisive,” which could derail the positive results of initial talks between the LDP president and Aquino, wherein the two have agreed to field a unified slate in the local level.

Lacson also accused Angara of reneging on their agreement made during the wake of Zamboanga City Mayor Ma. Clara Lobregat to keep the status quo in the national level and that the two factions would help each other in the local level. Benjamin B. Pulta
