SC to take up Kuratong case next week

SUPREME Court Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide Jr. Friday said the SC will take up next week the government's appeal on the Kuratong Baleleng multiple murder case involving opposition presidential candidate Panfilo M. Lacson.

Davide said "there has been a request for a special raffle of the case. It will probably be taken up for deliberation in the regular session on Tuesday next week."

A petition for certiorari on the Kuratong case signed by Solicitor General Alfredo Benipayo was filed with the SC Thursday. It was the third time that the criminal suit has been taken up to the High Court by prosecutors.

The 1,000-page petition reiterated the government's position seeking an overturn of the decision of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) clearing Lacson and his co-accused of the murder of 11 suspected members of the Kuratong Baleleng gang.

Solgen lawyers Bernardo Hernando and Eric Panga were co-signatories in the petition, which also sought a re-raffle of the case to a family court since two of the victims were allegedly minors at the time of the incident and the nullification of the QC RTC's ruling. Benjamin B. Pulta
