Drilon says opposition panicking

THE opposition is panicking and that is why it resorts to inventing charges against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

This, according to Senate President and Liberal Party President Franklin Drilon, as he stressed that the campaign of the Koalisyon ng Katapatan at Karanasan para sa Kinabukasan or K-4 is very effective.

“I think the opposition is worried, given the fact that after 30 days of campaigning, we are already leading them,” Drilon told reporters.

According to Drilon, the charges being hurled against Arroyo are baseless because these are part of her governance being the incumbent president.

He also said it is expected from the opposition to throw charges and accuse the president of electioneering since they are obviously panicking over results of recent surveys, showing Arroyo in the lead.

“The opposition would always charge her of electioneering but this is part of governance, these programs were being launched long before. There is no basis. Bakit noong may picture siya sa ibang program hindi naman napuna. Obviously, this is an illustration that every act of the president, which is part of her governance, is being attacked. I’m not surprised, this is expected,” Drilon added.

He also noted that the campaign of the President is very effective as shown in recent surveys where she takes the lead from her closest rival Fernando Poe Jr. of the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino and Raul Roco of Alyansa ng Pag-asa.

On the other hand, Drilon belittled Poe’s campaign sorties, saying the crowds are not an indication he will win the elections in May 10.

“Kahit hindi siya kandidato, talagang dudumugin si FPJ dahil sikat siyang artista (Even if he were not a candidate, FPJ would still be mobbed because he is a famous actor). So, that is not the indication of how the May 10 election will turn out,” Drilon said.

According to Drilon, admittedly Poe is a popular movie actor but the people would soon realize it takes more than directing a movie to succeed and run this country.

He also said the “one-liners” and “motherhood” statements of Poe could not be an assurance that he can run the country very well.

“The problems we are facing today, including budget deficit and debt burden cannot be solved by a collection of motherhood statements. The people would realize indeed that it takes more than motherhood statements, you need competence, you need experience,” Drilon pointed out. (JPM)
