PCCI lauds peaceful, orderly polls

THE Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) cited the Commission on Elections, police, military, teachers and civic groups for the orderly and peaceful conduct of the elections last Monday.

Herewith is the statement of PCCI Noemi Salud on the elections:

"The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) commends the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel), various cause-oriented organizations and volunteers, the military and police personnel and the hardworking and committed school teachers nationwide for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the May 10 elections.

The holding of this year's elections has once again put us in the mainstream of democratic exercise and discourse as one of the largest democracies in the Asia and in the world.

True enough, the estimated 80 percent turn out of voters from the 43 million registered voters all over the country is enough evidence that more than ever, we Filipinos are bonded by a common goal: to move the country forward by exercising our basic right to suffrage.

We welcome the participation of civil society in the elections, especially in safeguarding the votes of their countrymen.

We also adhere to our common aspirations, that transparency, reliability, accuracy and quickness in the canvassing of ballots, will prevail in the administration of the election results.

We are one with the entire nation, in recognizing the role of Namfrel as the sole organization recognized by the Comelec to conduct the partial and unofficial quick-count tallying of election returns.

We urge the public to remain vigilant in the monitoring of the election results.

We appeal to the candidates to respect the outcome of the elections and that related complaints be made official so as to not confuse the public and influence the outcome of the ongoing canvassing of ballots.

We have once again proven that amidst problems our nation is facing, we are able to forge consensus in upholding our freedom of choice and this freedom is anchored on our desire to transform this nation and step forward as One, Global, Filipino.

Let us unite and continue working together in making our aspirations and ideals of a truly democratic society become a reality." PR
