Lina asks local execs to lead in cleanup of poll materials

INTERIOR Sec. Jose Lina Jr. Wednesday called on all local officials and barangay tanods nationwide to take a lead role in cleaning their respective towns and cities of election campaign posters, streamers, flyers and other election paraphernalia.

"Now that the election is over, let's all join hands and start taking down all election campaign materials in our surroundings and keep our towns and cities clean again," Lina said.

He said as local chief executives, it is incumbent upon them to lead their constituents in cleaning and clearing structures, walls and posts of their communities with campaign materials posted in line with the recent elections.

Lina said the Commission on Elections (Comelec), through Resolution 6648, has deputized barangay officials and tanods nationwide to tear down and remove campaign propaganda materials in public places.

He also urged candidates and their followers, including non-government and civic organizations, to join in the clean-up drive in their barangays.

Lina said it is also the responsibility of all candidates, whether they won or lost in the elections, to take down campaign materials they posted in public places.

He explained that the cleanup is one way of showing sincerity and service local leaders and candidates have promised their constituents during the election period.

Meanwhile, Lina directed the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and volunteer fire brigades to assist local officials and groups in the clean-up operation in their respective areas of jurisdiction. JFF
