Navy bags 11 Viet fishermen for poaching
PHILIPPINE Navy (PN) operatives patrolling the waters of Tawi-Tawi and Jolo, Sulu Wednesday apprehended 11 Vietnamese nationals for poaching and 25 Filipinos for illegal fishing.
Commodore George Uy, commander of Naval Forces Western Mindanao, said the patrol gunboat BRP Jose Loor (PG 390) spotted an unlighted fishing boat southeast of Baguan island while it was going to Turtle island from Tawi-Tawi.
Uy said when Navymmen searched the fishing boat, they found out that it was loaded with shark meat and fins and ray fish classified as endangered species by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The boat was also equipped with an Icom-725 high frequency radio transceiver and Koden Radar model CVS-108, Global Positioning System and various gear used for net and line fishing. The Vietnamese on board presented documents written in the Vietnamese language.
Their Filipino companions refused to say anything during interrogation.
Further investigation revealed that the apprehended fishing vessel was based in Vietnam with registry number TG92069 TS and owned by a certain Nguyen Thanh Long.
Uy said the boat, which illegally entered the country, violated Section 87 (Poaching in Philippine Waters) of Republic Act (RA) 8550 otherwise known as Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
The Vietnamese and companions are being held at the Naval Forces Western Mindanao office in Zamboanga City. JFF
