Glo orders probe on Sultan Kudarat post-poll violence

PRESIDENT Arroyo Monday ordered an investigation into an incident in Sultan Kudarat wherein four followers of a mayoralty candidate were killed.

"The President has directed an immediate and speedy investigation of the Sultan Kudarat incident and a tight hold on law and order in the area," Bunye said.

The followers of Tong Paglas, who was running for mayor of Columbio town in Sultan Kudarat, were killed Saturday following a commotion during the transporting of ballot boxes by election officials.

The election officials, escorted by troops from the 604th Brigade and 66th Infantry Battalion and poll watchers, when accosted by aides of reelectionist Mayor Edwin Bermudez. Gunfire was heard as Bermudez' s supporters prevented the convoy from proceeding to Isulan town hall.

Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye appealed to all feuding candidates to be calm and sober.

He also said the military and police, who are there to protect the communities, cannot control the situation if the local candidates cannot hold their temper and keep their constituents in check. JMR
