Lim still leads in Comelec count

FORMER Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim maintained his lead over 48 other senatorial candidates in the latest tally by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) of votes in the senatorial race.

Lim, candidate of the opposition Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) garnered 87,616 votes followed by actor Ramon Revilla Jr. of Koalisyon ng Katapatan at Karanasan para sa Kinabukasan (K4) with 84,349 votes and re-electionist Sen. Aquilino Pimentel Jr. (KNP) with 80,094.

Five candidates from the KNP were in the Magic 12. They are former Sens. Juan Ponce Enrile (4th place) and Ernesto Maceda (5th place), former San Juan Mayor Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada (9th). The rest were from the K4.

As of 11:05 a.m. May 17 with 82,794 votes cast, the tally is as follows: Alfredo Lim (KNP) - 87,616; Ramon Revilla Jr. (K4) - 84,349; Aquilino Pimentel Jr. (KNP) - 80,094; Juan Ponce Enrile (KNP) - 75,361; Miriam Santiago (K4) - 75,240; Mar Roxas (K4)- 74,891; Ernesto Maceda (KNP) - 72,397; John Osmeña (K4) - 65,814; Jinggoy Estrada (KNP) - 65,331; Lito Lapid (K4) - 64,339; Rodolfo Biazon (K4) - 63,632; Dick Gordon (K4) - 62,281; Orlando Mercado (K4) - 62,143; Robert Barbers (K4) - 58,181; Francisco Tatad (KNP) - 56,997

Commissioner Resurreccion Borra said at the average of 20 COCs canvassed daily, counting would be over in the next eight to nine days.

Meanwhile, the Comelec defended the slow pace of the ongoing counting at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City, citing the need for accuracy.

Reporters covering the canvassing observed that the Comelec only released its first official tally sheet on the second day of the canvassing and the data was that of the previous day. Prior to that, reporters resorted to compiling unofficial tallies due to the absence of an official tally to produce available yet unofficial count.

"There are nine signatures needed before I sign (the national tally sheet). Everybody has to check and double-check. We have to be very, very sure and very, very careful. Tapos na yung (We are done with the) canvassing so its just the tabulation (that has to be waited for)," Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos said.

He also said it takes time for the tally to be released since the canvassed results have to pass through departments handling tabulation, auditing and encoding before it is released.
