Special polls set in 14 towns, 4 provinces

SPECIAL elections will be held in 14 municipalities in four provinces soon, it was learned from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

The areas and corresponding number of towns where special elections will be held are Lanao del Sur (six towns), Lanao del Norte (six towns), Nueva Vizcaya (one town) and Kalinga (one town).

In Kalinga and Nueva Vizcaya, election paraphernalia, which included ballot boxes and election returns, were snatched by armed men while in transit.

In the Lanao provinces, the delay was mainly caused by the absence of election paraphernalia and board of election inspectors.

In other developments, the commission en banc passed a resolution on the transfer of the canvassing of votes from Tawi-Tawi to the Comelec main office in Intramuros, Manila. The change of venue stemmed from security concerns arising from political tension and poll-related violence in Tawi-Tawi.

Meanwhile, the Comelec said it would only look into allegations of electoral fraud only if there is solid evidence to back them.

Abalos said parties with objections or claims that they were cheated should first produce evidence before the commission can act on them.

The commission also denied accusations by the opposition that canvassing was held in the towns of Ampatuan and Datu Piang in Maguindanao despite claims that no elections ever took place there.

Regional Election Director Clarita Callar said there were elections in the specified areas mentioned by Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) senatorial candidate Francisco Tatad.
