Vatican picks new Manila auxiliary bishop
POPE John Paul II Monday appointed Msgr. Bernardino Cortez as the new auxiliary bishop of Manila.
Fr. James Reuter of the National Office of Mass Media said the appointment by Cortez was approved by the Vatican Monday. It was relayed to him by Archbishop Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.
Cortez replaced former Manila Auxiliary Bishop Socrates Villegas, who was appointed by the Vatican as bishop of Balanga, Bataan last May 3.
Cortez is the current parish priest of Los Banos, Laguna and administrator of the Diocese of San Pablo.
Cortez graduated from the San Carlos Seminary in 1974. He earned his master's degree in Theology at Fribourg, Switzerland after doing three years of Pastoral Ministry in France.
The other position vacated by Bishop Villegas, which is rector of Our Lady of Peace (Edsa) Shrine, is no longer vacant. He was succeeded by Fr. Victor Apacible from the Lay Information Center of the San Carlos Seminary.
The 44-year-old priest is a dentist by profession. He was appointed to the position two weeks ago. Marie Neri
