National ICT certification program gains PCCI recognition

IN THE two months since its launching, the National ICT Certification Program (NICP) has become recognized as the foundational-competency scheme for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) professionals in the Philippines.

NICP now gets credit from the country's largest business organization, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), as being vital in ensuring that the quality of ICT workers is in accordance with globally recognized standards.

"Certifying key technical personnel to NICP standards will assure the local and international business market of consistency, professionalism and quality involved in the skills development process of our ICT workers," said Francis Ferrer, PCCI vice president for ICT and export development. "We hope that NICP becomes a widely accredited and highly successful certification program in the field of ICT. Rest assured, it has the full support of PCCI," he added.

Alongside NICP's launching in May, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed among the IT Association of the Philippines (Itap) and the certification providers, namely, Sun Microsystems, Microsoft Philippines, Inc., Oracle Philippines, Cisco Systems, SAP Philippines, ePLDT, Japanese IT Standard Examination Philippines Foundation and Peoplesupport Philippines, Inc., in support of the NICP.

In the agreement, the certification providers will provide a discount on their certification examinations. In addition, government agencies such as the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (Cict), Commission on Higher Education (Ched) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the IT Foundation of the Philippines (ITFP), Itap, PCCI, Cebu Educational Development Foundation for Information Technology (Cedf-IT), and www.itpros.ph, to undertake the NICP.

Meanwhile, the Cict has announced the holding of Certify IT!, an IT Certification Conference and Exhibition on September 21 and 22 at Hotel Intercon in Makati City. The event features on-site training, vendor clinics and IT jobs fair and is one of the many activities done in support of the NICP.
