Congress forms appointments committee

THE powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) was constituted Wednesday with 22 members appointed to it, in accordance with the Constitution.

The Senate and the House of Representatives have nominated their respective representatives in the body.

Among the CA members who took their oath are Sens. Rodolfo Biazon, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Ralph Recto, Manuel "Mar" Roxas III, Richard Gordon, Manuelito "Lito" Lapid, Francis Pangilinan, Edgardo Angara, Juan Ponce Enrile, Luisa "Loi" Estrada, Panfilo Lacson and Sergio Osmeña III.

The members of the CA from the Lower House are Reps. Prospero Pichay, Clavel Asas-Martinez, Marcelino Libanan, Prospero Amatong, Jesus Jurdin Romualdo, Manuel Ortega, Rafael Nantes, Antonino Roman, Aurelio Umali and Ma. Imelda "Imee" Marcos.

During the organizational meeting, it has been reported that as of last August 24, there are 296 ad interim appointments submitted to the commission by the Office of the President.

Of the 296 appointees, 169 of them have submitted complete documentary requirements while 118 have not yet submitted their papers.

Senate President Franklin Drilon, chairman of the CA, said Malacañang has not yet submitted the nominations of the Cabinet secretaries except that of Interior and Secretary Angelo Reyes.

"For this reason, the committees in the CA cannot yet hold public hearings to pass upon the qualifications and merit of the appointments to the Cabinet," Drilon said. (JPM)
