SK team lost anew
IT'S now 2-0 for the hosts in the Philippine Basketball Association-Korean Basketball League Goodwill Series.
After Sta. Lucia Realty took the icebreaker with a 106-103 win over the SK Knights Wednesday, Coca-Cola provided the follow-up Thursday also with a three-point decision over the same Korean team at the Arellano University Gym in Manila.
Two free throws by William Antonio with five seconds left in the clock and a good defensive job by the Tigers in the ensuing play gave Coca-Cola a 93-90 win in the series serving as appetizer to the forthcoming PBA All-Filipino Cup.
SK import Leon White, who suited up for Purefoods in its successful campaign in the 2002 Governors Cup, erupted for 28 points but the Tigers held their ground on a well-balanced attack.
Seven Tigers, led by Ato Morano with 15, finished in double figures.
Korean dead shot Cho Song Hyun nearly stole the show as he rifled in three successive three-pointers that brought the Knights back to life, 90-91, in the closing seconds.
But the Tigers made sure there would be no final-second bomb that would break their heart apart as Lee Sang Min did to the Philippines in the Busan Asian Games two years ago.
After Antonio made it 93-90 on two charities, the Tigers drew a defensive net that denied the Koreans a decent attempt at a possible equalizer.
Coca-Cola fell behind by nine, 31-40, at the half but wheeled ahead, 65-61, after three quarters mainly behind its sleek running game.
The Knights had their last taste of the lead at 79-77 before Morano presided over a decisive attack that had the Tigers seizing the lead for good at 87-84.
