Honest Pinoy cabbie honored on 'Maalaala Mo Kaya'

HE'S been celebrated by the New York City Government and the Philippine Government. He's been invited by Tom Cruise to attend a promotional event for one of his movies. And he's considered another modern hero, a man who has done the country proud in foreign seas.

His name is Nestor Sulpico and he is best known as the New York City taxi driver who returned an excess of US$200,000 worth of black pearls after a passenger left them in his cab. On Thursday, "Maalaala Mo Kaya" will honor this exceptional Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) with an episode spotlighting his life starring multi-award-winning actor Albert Martinez as Nestor and directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina from a script by Rhoda Sulit.

He is, of course, a cabdriver in one of the busiest cities in the world. But there is a hidden story in Nestor Sulpico's life, which "Maalaala Mo Kaya" will seek to uncover and dramatize this week. The son of a poor family in Iloilo, Nestor was a delinquent youth and a carefree teen. So why did he decide to immigrate to the US? Why did he become a cabbie? And despite the fact that he was not a rich man, why was he not tempted to keep the pearls that he found?

"Maalaala Mo Kaya" has assembled an excellent cast to play out this story of a world-class hero starting with Boots Anson-Roa as Nestor's mother and Menggie Cobarrubias as Nestor's father. Michelle Bayle and Carlo Aquino as the young Nestor also star. This is also Cathy Garcia-Molina's first "Maalaala Mo Kaya" episode since winning the Outstanding Director plum from the KBP Golden Dove Awards. PR
