Red Bull dumps Suncity Dragons
BRUNEI -- Red Bull signified its intention of leaving a good impression in the 4th Shell Rimula Ultra Invitational basketball tournament by dumping China's Shanghai Sharks, 88-74, Sunday night at the National Indoor Stadium.
The Barakos looking every inch ready for the coming 2004-2005 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) season, dictated the pace from the start and took control of the match throughout.
Vergel Meneses, Red Bull's latest recruit, treated the small Filipino crowd who came to support the PBA teams with a variety of acrobatic moves while Mick Pennisi riddled the Chinese, carrying the colors of Suncity Dragons in the tournament, with three-point shots in the first quarter for a 28-19 lead.
Purefoods, the other PBA squad seeing action in the tournament, bid farewell in its debut losing to Chinese-Taipei's top team - the Chuon Tzu Yulon - 75-83.
"We had a good start and the players managed to sustain the momentum," said Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao after the game.
"Hopefully our stint here will keep us in shape heading to the upcoming
(PBA) season," he added.
The Shanghai Sharks, champions of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) in 2002, appeared out of sync and a bit slow of defense. By halftime, the Barakos, who displayed impressive ball movement, pushed their lead to 47-33 and the Chinese never recovered from there.
Davonn Harp led the Red Bull with 20 points and had eight rebounds. PR
