Palace willing to limit AFP chief's term to 3 years
MALACANANG on Friday said it is open to having a fixed term of three years for the Armed Forces chief of staff.
"Nararapat na pag-aralan ang ganitong panukala. Mayroon ding merit ang ganitong panukala (It is but right to study the proposal. The proposal has merit) and it deserves consideration," Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said.
Military officials and personnel earlier proposed during a Senate hearing Thursday that the term of the AFP chief of staff be fixed at three years because the terms of the past AFP chiefs are too short.
The proposal was also supported by Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, a former AFP chief, who served only for less than a year during the Ramos administration.
Biazon said an AFP chief who already has a fixed term should be exempted from the mandatory retirement age of 56, which is the reason for their short tenure, unless they are given an extension by the President.
He also proposed a two-year fixed term for major service commanders to shield the military selection process from personal and political considerations.
Although top military officials have short tours of duty, they are given Cabinet posts and directorial jobs in government corporations. JMR
