Cremated remains should be placed in the church: bishop
"EVENTHOUGH the church permits cremation, there is still the preference of the Catholic Church for a Christian burial because it's an aged old custom."
Thus said Msgr. Hernando Coronel, secretary general and spokesman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), issued the statement as more and more Catholic now prefer having the deceased loved ones cremated.
Coronel said although they understand that the reason why a number of Catholics now choose to cremate their dearly departed for economic and practical reasons, this should not be a cause to disregard ground burial.
He said the ashes of the cremated person should be entrusted to the Catholic Church for safekeeping and not placed in the homes of their families because there are chances that the soul of the dead individual will not get the needed prayers.
"The proper place is still with the church and the church is able to pray for those who are buried there or those ashes that are entrusted to the keeping of the church," Coronel said.
Meanwhile, Coronel urged Catholics to pray for the souls of their departed loved on All Saints and All Souls Day.
"We are urged them to visit our faithful departed in the cemeteries and we are urging that we pray and remember their good memories," Coronel said. (Marie Neri)
