DOJ sends team to HK to work out 'drug lord' extradition

A CRACK team of government lawyers has been sent to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) to make representations with local court authorities there for the possible extradition of suspected drug lord Calvin Tan.

Justice Undersecretary Ernesto Pineda and State Prosecutor Pablo Formaran III was assigned by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. to convince a Hong Kong court to allow Tan's transfer back to Manila to face charges in connection with an extensive narcotics-manufacturing operation recently uncovered in Mandaue City, Cebu.

The team is expected to attend the hearing on the case on November 1 before a Hong Kong tribunal.

An official from the Hong Kong state ministry handling the case of Tan has met with Gonzalez to work with Philippine authorities for Tan's possible transfer to the Philippines

Tan has apparently offered to surrender his Philippine passport to the Hong Kong magistrate trying him for a separate violation of possession of narcotics in Macau.
