Opposition senator sees fall of Arroyo

"SHE'S finished. She's going to fall. My proposal is for her to step down."

Thus said former Sen. Francisco Tatad, referring to President Arroyo who is now having problems in solving the country's fiscal crisis.

Tatad stressed that his intention is asking for President Arroyo's resignation is not because of hatred but because it is clear that the Arroyo does not know how to manage the government, which is evident in the current scandal in various government agencies as well as the controversy hounding the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

"She has to accept that she can't do it. She doesn't have the support of the people," said Tatad.

Earlier, a survey by Ibon Foundation showed that 76 percent of Filipinos are dissatisfied with Arroyo's performance.

Although Tatad said he is not in favor of another people's revolt, a change in government can be attained through peaceful means like a dialogue or negotiation wherein the President would voluntarily step down from Malacañang.

"The issue here is not GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) but the survival of the country. Let's talk about what's good for this country," he said.

Tatad said there is an immediate need to institute measures to prevent the country's economic collapse.

Various sectors have been calling for the President's resignation and ouster from Malacañang after she failed to arrest the fiscal crisis and rampant corruption in the government. (Marie Neri)
