Roderick Paulate's award-winning performance on 'Maalaala'
AFTER winning many accolades from local and international award-giving bodies for his heart-wrenching drama performances on "Maalaala Mo Kaya", actor Roderick Paulate again proved to be a lucky charm for television's most acclaimed primetime anthology as he won yet another Best Actor in a Drama award from the 2004 Star Awards for Television.
To celebrate this honor, "Maalaala Mo Kaya" will air his award-winning showcase as comedian Bentong in the story of Bentong's life on Thursday right after ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.
Because he won a career-changing Best Drama Actor Award at the 2000 Asian TV Awards for his performance in the Olive Lamasan-directed episode "Abo," and again in the 2003 Awards with a highly commended performance in the episode "Torotot," Roderick has always considered "Maalaala Mo Kaya" as his second television home. And because "Maalaala" is always such a great showcase for his dramatic acting, every Roderick Paulate episode in 'Maalaala Mo Kaya" is a must-see. This award-winning appearance pairs him up with Manilyn Reynes, who takes on the role of Bentong's wife Cecille, in an inspiring rags-to-riches story.
Bentong's story is also close to Kuya Dick's heart: apart from the fact that he and Bentong have worked together in many ABS-CBN projects, they are also fellow Bicolanos, with Kuya Dick's family hailing from Legaspi City, Albay and Bentong being born and bred in Tabaco, Albay.
Many see him as a comedian who is willing to do anything for a laugh in many of ABS-CBN's comedies, but what few people know is that Bentong has lived a long, hard life before he was discovered by ABS-CBN. The child of a carpenter and albulario from Tabaco, Albay, Bentong was born Domingo Brotamante, the eighth of 13 children.
Showbusiness was really far from Bentong's mind while growing up: he dropped out of school after reaching Grade 6 in order to work in the rice fields and alongside his father in the shipyards around his hometown. So how did hard work, perseverance, and a dream to make his life better for his family bring Bentong to the success he enjoys now? Paulate co-stars with Reynes and Bunggoy Manahan in a teleplay written by Maribel Ilag and directed by Gilbert Perez. (PR)
