New Army chief assumes post

ARMY Lt. Gen. Generoso Senga took over as Philippine Army chief, replacing Lt. Gen. Efren Abu who assumed as Armed Forces chief of staff last Friday.

In turnover rites held in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City, Abu asked Senga to help him reform and eradicate corruption in the Army.

Abu also urged his successor to exercise transparency in his unit and in all of his dealings.

Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz, a guest speaker in the event, called on all military officers "to continue working with courage, integrity and professionalism."

He appealed to the soldiers not to allow any individual to destroy the AFP.

Senga, for his part, said he would prioritize looking into the alleged anomaly at the Fort Bonifacio General Hospital wherein expired drugs were allegedly given to patients there.

Senga is Abu's mistah (classmate) as they both belonged to the Philippine Military Academy Class '72.

He formerly held the Southern Command (Southcom) top post prior to his novel position. He also served as spokesman of the military before his designation in Mindanao Region.

Senga's previous position will be taken over by Lt. Gen. Alberto Braganza. The turnover of Southcom leadership is scheduled on Thursday in the Southcom headquarters in Zamboanga City. (JFF)
