Justice office okays to put up jail for women in Davao
JUSTICE Secretary Raul Gonzales announced Saturday that the department has approved to put up the woman-inmates facility in Davao City.
Gonzalez said the non-governmental organization, Women Network Group (Women Net) will assist the government's rehabilitation program for female inmates.
At present, prisoners from the southern part of the country are transported all the way to Mandaluyong City in Manila where the DOJ's Women's Correctional facility is located, a situation which ends all contact between the inmates and their relatives.
More than 80 percent of women prisoners are mothers with their children while some are pregnant.
The woman-inmates facility will be put up inside the Davao Penal Colony, which is under the supervision of Bureau of Corrections Chief Vicente Vinarao.
The project is being supported by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte who has agreed to provide P3 million in funding for the project.
Likewise supporting the project is the Davao Lady Lawyers Association (Dallas).(Benjamin B. Pulta)
