Arroyo to attend Asean summit on tsunami disaster
PRESIDENT Arroyo will attend one-day summit in Jakarta on January 6 to discuss measures and contingencies on handling future catastrophes like the recent tsunami-earthquake that hit several countries in Asia and claimed more than 100,000lives.
"PGMA will attend special Asean leaders meeting in Jakarta on January 6. Purpose of the meeting is to coordinate the response to the tsunami crisis," said Press Secretary and presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye.
Bunye said Arroyo would leave on January 6, but he is not yet certain how long Arroyo's stay in Jakarta. He said details are still being worked out.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono sent the invitation to Arroyo last December 31. The conduct of the summit was proposed by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong following the tsunami that heavily affected the countries of Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and India.
Aside from leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (Asean), others that confirmed their attendance to the meeting includes United Nations Chair Koffi Anan United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
Asked what contributions the Philippines might provide to the calamity victims Bunye reiterated the Philippines commitment to send a humanitarian team comprised of doctors, nurses and forensic experts. (JMR)
