GDP growth not enough to lift RP out of crisis: Bunye
MALACANANG Tuesday said the 6.1 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) growth for 2004 is not enough to get the country over the hump.
"We need to come up with more. We should not rely on this alone," said Press secretary and presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye.
Bunye said the Philippine economy is still in a critical period and must sustain its momentum and speed, "otherwise, we could stall and that could be dangerous for all of us."
"Much as we are very ecstatic about this 6.1 (per cent growth) but we know we have to do more in order to really bring our country over the hump," he said.
He said all the Philippines needs to become more globally competitive and to completely shun the label of economic basket case of Asia is "one great heave of productivity and enterprise."
"Let us leave the divisive recriminations behind and close ranks in the march to a better future, where a strong economy will bring more jobs, clean water, more classrooms, better health care and more shelter for the average Filipino," he said.
