'Survivor' returns with 'Survivor: Palau'
A CANCER survivor, a Vegas showgirl, a self-described "redneck," and a guy who just came there to lose weight. Television's biggest reality series returns with a decidedly eclectic band of new competitors - its biggest batch ever - this Friday, as Studio 23 brings out the newest season of "Survivor" with "Survivor: Palau".
"Survivor: Palau" marks the tenth season for this reality hit, and as such, Studio 23 goes all the way for Filipino fans by carrying this new season live via satellite, starting with the premiere episode of "Survivor: Palau" from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday.
The episode's primetime airing will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Regular primetime airings will air every Sunday at 7 p.m.
Continuing the tradition of picking picturesque backgrounds for notorious backstabbing games of "Survivor", the producers have again scouted a location of great symbolic import. Located in the South Pacific and bordering the Philippine Sea, Palau is part of the Caroline Islands, and is so rich in natural beauty that it is often called the eighth natural wonder of the world. But its colorful fauna, dense jungles and lush marine resources hide a bloody history: back in World War II, Palau was the theatre for one of the most vicious battles in military history. In it, more than 1,200 Americans were killed, as well as 11,000 Japanese soldiers.
Will there be a similar bloody battle awaiting the new "Survivor" cast? Already, there are rumors of a battle with sharks, Survivors being cast adrift with only maps, and an unconfirmed story of several competitors quitting after just the first episode. All the production team confirms, however, are the identities of the twenty new castaways - the biggest Survivor cast in history.
All aboard for this new ride are Wanda Shirk, a 55-year-old English teacher from Ulysses, Pennsylvannia; Coby Archa, 32, a hairdresser from Athens, Texas; Ashlee Ashby, a 22-year-old fitness counselor from South Carolina; Jonathan Libby, 23, who is in sales and marketing and hails from Dallas, Texas; Gregg Carey, 27, a business consultant from Chicago; Katie Gallagher, 29, an ad executive from Merced, Calif.; James Miller, a 33-year-old steel worker from Mobile, Alabama; Caryn Groedel, 46, is a lawyer from Ohio; Jolanda Jones, a 39-year-old lawyer from Houston, Texas; Willard Smith from Bellevue, Wash., a 57-year-old lawyer; Stephenie LaGrossa, 25, a pharmaceutical sales rep from Philadelphia; Angie Jakusz, a 24-year-old bartender from New Orleans; Ian Rosenberger, 23, a dolphin trainer from Key Largo, Florida; Kimberly Mullen, 25, is a graduate student and former Miss Ohio USA from Huber Heights, Ohio; Bobby Jon Drinkard, 27 and a waiter from Troy, Alabama; Ibrehem Rahman, another 27-year-old waiter from Alabama; Jennifer Lyon, 32, a nanny from Encino, California; Janu Tornell, 39, a Las Vegas show girl; Jeff Wilson, 22, a personal trainer from Ventura, California; and Tom Westman, a 41-year-old New York City firefighter.
