Group welcomes offer of limitless calls, texts
THE advocacy group TxTPower described Friday as "a terrific victory for consumers" the offerings of "unlimited call and text plans" by telecommunication giants Smart and Globe.
"Finally, the reality of unlimited calls and text has come to Philippine shores. After refusing to offer such a service, Smart and Globe have now been forced to follow the worldwide trend," said TxTPower convenor Anthony Ian Cruz.
Cruz cited two consecutive announcements by Smart and Globe on their "unlimited call and text plans" and the initial offering by Sun Cellular is "a vindication for TxTPower as we have long pressed that they provide this service because it is possible in mobile telephony networks such as the ones they operate."
TxTPower said consumers hope that the "unlimited call and text plans" to become permanent.
"Going unlimited is the trend worldwide. Telecom firms have long provided it to consumers in the United States and Europe for some time. Their prior example shows that it is feasible technologically and financially," said Cruz.
Cruz added that the unlimited calls and text will be a boon to Filipinos, especially to families separated by work or school, to companies and to the government. "We expect closer and more frequent communications among our people."
He urged the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to safeguard consumer rights by "monitoring the telecoms compliance with government regulations, especially on call quality and message delivery."
"The NTC should also prevent the telecoms from any new price increases as these unlimited calls and text may be perfectly within network capacity and entail no big expense for the operators," said Cruz. (PR/TxtPower)
