Editorial: A painful lesson

IT TOOK the deaths of 26 innocent grade school children in Mabini town in Bohol due to food poisoning last Wednesday to teach us all a painful lesson, one that all of us will never forget.

Government now has to act fast and provide ways and means to offer public and private school children safe and nutritious food to eat during recess so that such a tragic incident won't happen again.

To school children who are hungry, it won't matter to them if the food sold by ambulant vendors outside is either unhygienic or have no nutrition value at all. The fact is that the food they sell is cheaper because more often than not, food sold in their school canteen is expensive, if not tastes bland.

Someone has to pay for the terrible fate that befell the kids, even if the one responsible is also suffering the effects of ingesting poisoned food.

It was a heart wrenching sight on national television last Thursday to see parents of the children wail as their little angles were being entombed. We can only offer our sincerest condolences to the family left behind by the kids and prayers for the repose of their souls.
