Lady examinee from UP tops bar exams

(Updated 2:50 p.m.) A WOMAN from the University of the Philippines (UP) topped more than 5,000 hopefuls in last year’s bar examinations, the results of which were released Friday by the Supreme Court (SC).

January Sanchez placed first while three other graduates of UP's College of Law, namely, Ronald de Vera, Joseph Joemer Perez and Neil Simon Silva, landed in the top 10 placing second, eighth and ninth, respectively.

San Beda College (SBC) likewise dominated the top 10 list with its graduates Charlito Mendoza, Efren Vincent Dizon and Ma. Melissa Tan placing third, fifth and seventh, respectively.

Two graduates from the Cebu-based University of San Carlos (USC), Ma. Christina Larrolis (fourth) and Ma. Melissa Jamera (10th) also landed in the list while a lone graduate from the Ateneo de Manila University law School, Michael Geronimo Martin (sixth) making it.

A bar examiner in one of the subjects, Ricardo Castro, managing partner of the Quisumbing Torres law office, said "the common complaint is that the bar examinees are not able to express themselves in English very well which results into their getting low grades.

That is only partially true. Many of the examinees are articulate but they are simply careless and miss important details in the problems. They leave questions unanswered or skip over them. Concluding statements often contradict the facts or laws cited.

One gets the feeling that the majority do not strive for excellence anymore."

A total of 5,249 law graduates took the bar exams last year but only 1,659 of them passed.

The passing percentage is a marked improvement over last year's results which saw a mere 20 percent hurdle the grueling four-week exam. Voting 12-0, the SC disbarred Danilo de Guzman for leaking the mercantile law questions in 2003's bar exams. (BBP)
