Transport agency seeks comments on fare hike petitions

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) gave transport groups three days from Thursday to submit their position papers on a petition for a P1.50 fare increase.

The LTFRB will also ask the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), as representative of the commuters, to answer the petition. The agency would then study and decide how much fare increase would be granted.

Federation of the Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (Fejodap) president Zeny Maranan and Philippine Confederation of Drivers and Operators-Association of Concerned Transport Organizations (PCDO-Acto) president Efren de Luna earlier asked for the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law and the exclusion of oil and petroleum products from value-added tax (VAT) during the first day of a hearing on the fare increase petition conducted by LTFRB Chairwoman Elena Bautista.

Maranan said a fare increase is necessary for the drivers and operators to cope with the increase in oil prices.

She assured that representatives from various transport groups will attend the transportation summit on May 4 called by Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will preside over the summit.

Mendoza ordered the LTFRB to rule on the jeepney drivers' fare increase petition within 10 days following Monday's nationwide transport strike that paralyzed public transportation in Metro Manila and other key urban cities. (JFF)
