Editorial: Why the sudden exit?

THE departure of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo for Singapore didn't help the Arroyo administration at all amidst accusations that the Presidential spouse and son, Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo, benefited from jueteng operations.

Flight is indicative of guilt, so they say.

Granting that the vacation that Mr. Arroyo and his brother, Negros Occidental Representative Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo, took was planned long ago as what was reported, why take it now when he is mired in controversy?

Instead of leaving the country, Mr. Arroyo should have stayed behind to face the music. Or he could just keep quiet and away from the limelight and let his spokesperson speak for him.

We can only hope that any investigation on the jueteng issue would come out with credible results and clear those innocent of the charges.

We welcome President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's order on an investigation of her husband and son with regard jueteng payola. Which makes us think, what if the inquiry proves her husband and son benefited from jueteng? We wonder what will be her next move.
