'Kampanerang Kuba' premieres on June 6

IT'S a fairy tale and a drama too. A classic fantasy for the entire family. A musical and dramatic treat for your primetime viewing. Starting June 6, ABS-CBN will present the teleserye that will change the shape of your weekday evenings, when it airs its newest project, "Kampanerang Kuba".

Based on the classic silver-screen tale by noted writer Pablo S. Gomez, which was brought to life by movie legend Vilma Santos, "Kampanerang Kuba" - the television incarnation - has been updated and re-imagined in a way TV viewers have never seen before - as a drama, fantasy and musical all rolled into one.

With an all-star cast led by Anne Curtis in the title role, Eula Valdes, Jean Garcia, Jomari Yllana, Jodi Santamaria, Christian Bautista, Patrick Garcia and Luis Manzano, "Kampanerang Kuba" still remains the touching story of Fatima (Anne Curtis), nicknamed Imang, a young woman whose physical deformities never stopped her from being a kind, cheerful and helpful person. Much of the credit for her personality comes from the fact that she was raised in a convent by strict but doting nuns, whose kindness she pays back by being of service around the convent, especially as the kampanera (bell-ringer) of the convent's church.

But Imang's story does not begin there - not with her mysterious connection to Lourdes (Eula Valdez) and Lucia (Jean Garcia), two sisters from one of the richest families in Imang's town. What binds Imang to the sisters, Lourdes' husband domineering Martin (Jomari Yllana), Lucia's husband Antonio (Yul Servo), Lourdes and Martin's ill-tempered daughter Veronica (Jodi Santamaria), and that fateful night when Lourdes and Lucia gave birth at the same time?

ABS-CBN is also pleased to announce the selection of three exceptional young men to play as the love interests of Curtis - Luis Manzano, Christian Bautista and Patrick Garcia. This is the first dramatic role for Luis, who is also the son of filmdom's original "Kampanerang Kuba", Vilma Santos. This is also the first television role for top-selling singing idol Christian but he is no novice actor - Christian spent his teen years in the theatre. Patrick, meanwhile, is a familiar name not just on television but in film, as one of the country's leading young dramatic actors.

Included in the "Kampanerang Kuba" cast are: versatile actors Edgar "Bobot" Mortiz, who also starred in the film with Santos; Cherrie Pie Picache; Malou de Guzman; Meryll Soriano; Eugene Domingo and Chokoleit. The versatility of the entire cast will come in handy for the demands of "Kampanerang Kuba", which will also feature musical sequences and original songs created especially for the show by composer and lyricist Vince de Jesus, whose prior work as musical director include the score of films "Crying Ladies" and "La Visa Loca."

Wenn Deramas and Andoy Ranay, who first collaborated on the top-rating and pioneering fantaserye "Marina" return for directing duties on "Kampanerang Kuba". Mio Siojo and Narciso Gulmatico share executive producer credit on the show with Ginny Ocampo serving as production manager. Jake Tordesillas is the creative manager with Keiko Aquino as head writer. Olivia Lamasan serves as the executive in-charge with Malou N. Santos in-charge of the over-all production.

Tune in for the magical world of "Kampanerang Kuba" starting June 6 only on ABS-CBN. (PR)
