A battered wife's story on 'Maalaala'

WHEN Republic Act (RA) 9262 otherwise known as the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act was ratified in March 2004, many advocates of women's and children's rights celebrated the decision as a landmark in the fight against domestic violence.

Despite the law's far-reaching influence in making domestic violence a criminal offense however, very few people know the stories that influenced the people who lobbied for RA 9262's creation.

On Thursday, ABS-CBN's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" brings you the story of Dolores Lorenzo, a policewoman whose ordeal at the hands of her husband inspired the creation of RA 9262.

Dolores Lorenzo was one of the top policewomen of the Tuguegarao police, adept at both police raids and covert operations against communist rebels. But her bravery on the job was the polar opposite of her domestic life where she was left at the mercy of her drunken, abusive husband Agapito. But after more than six years of suffering in silence, one night in 1990, Dolores had had enough, and stabbed her husband 59 times. What made Dolores snap? And what was it about her story that so touched the people who fought for the creation of RA 9262?

The episode features intense performances from Lotlot de Leon as Dolores, Wowie de Guzman as Agapito, Spanky Manikan as Dolores' father Nardo, and Empress Schuck and Celine Lim as Dolores' daughter Ana at age 5 and age 11 as well as Kimberly Diaz, Gigette Reyes and Neil Sese. Jerome Pobocan directs from a script by Dado Lumibao and Peng Balase.

Charo Santos-Concio narrates another quality episode of ABS-CBN's "Maalaala Mo Kaya" on Thursday. (PR)
