Editorial: Hearsay as of now
FORMER jueteng operator Wilfredo Mayor said a mouthful when he appeared last Monday in a joint hearing by two Senate committees looking into the jueteng issue. He implicated legislators, top police officials, Manila-based journalists and presidential son and Pampanga Representative Juan Miguel Arroyo to the illegal numbers game.
As expected, the personalities named by Mayor strongly denied the accusations. Ho-hum, what else is new?
Mayor admitted that he did not see the congressmen themselves receive the money. He said it was their bagmen that he dealt with. Legally speaking, Mayor's statements are pure hearsay...for now.
Unless and until Mayor or his patron, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, can provide solid proof of the involvement of those persons allegedly involved in jueteng, the testimony and claims made by the former jueteng lord will not suffice.
The senators have summoned the alleged bagmen to appear in the next hearing. Will they be the ones to provide the evidence? And will the evidence stand in court? Abangan ang susunod na kabanata!
