Business group appeals for rule of law amid political crisis
A MAJOR business organization said Monday that it is not supporting any move to subvert the Arroyo government.
Donald Dee, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), said they oppose any move to depose the current leadership without going through constitutional processes.
Dee said in a press statement while they welcome and recognize the right of any person, it should be in accordance with the 1987 Constitution.
The PCCI expressed concern over the impact of the current political crisis to the economy.
"Business is wary over the impact of the current political crisis on the economy, and any move that will further jeopardize the country's economic and political environments will only result in social and political chaos," Dee said.
He called on the public to stay united and discern the present political situation to be able to forge a better future for the nation.
"This is a crucial period of our nation's future. If we allow unconstitutional actions to take precedence in our quest for progress, we would be violating the very foundation of our democratic legacy," he said.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier promised to take responsibility for her act of talking to a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official at the height of the canvassing of presidential votes last year. She apologized for the act and asked the public to forgive her.
There have been calls for Arroyo's resignation following her admission but she continues to reject them.
Bayan Muna party-list Representative Joel Virador said the President's continued stay in Malacañang only "adds fuel to the grave political crisis engulfing the country today."
"The people deserve more than an apology. Her (President) so-called apology is not the solution to our political and economic crises, which our country is now facing. Subverting the people's will through electoral fraud is the highest crime for a public official. Her declaration of guilt should be coupled with resignation," he said. (JFF)
