'Lasponggols': One last take, one last shot

"LASPONGGOLS," one of the finalists in the full-length feature category of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2005, will be shown at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) from July 13 to 17. It is a black comedy about two film workers who pretended to be directors (famous yet unrecognizable) when they accidentally ended up in a secluded barrio.

The new digital movie, from the script and direction of young filmmaker Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez, was inspired by "Maliliit na Tao sa Pelikula," an essay written by his guru Ricky Lee in "Si Tatang at mga Himala ng Ating Panahon," a collection of works by the acclaimed scriptwriter. "Lasponggols" is a slang used to describe the last take/shot in a local production.

"Lasponggols" stars Dwight Gaston as Raffy, a clapper, and Jeffrey Quizon as Dido, a utility boy. They introduced themselves to the townsfolk as Direk Erik Matti and Direk Jon Red, respectively, in their attempt to elude a group of armed men who are chasing them for the film equipment they were carrying in the production unit van. As they make the villagers believe that they were shooting a film, the sleepy rural town becomes a microcosm of the local film industry.

Supporting Gaston and Quizon are Boboy Garovillo as the barrio captain, Roence Santos as his racketeer wife, Sasi Casas as the couple's son, Danny Javier as a blind former cameraman, Jim Paredes as an eccentric artist, Soliman Cruz as a gay pretending to be a production designer, Sharmaine Centenera-Buencamino as a stage mother, Raul Morit as the village idiot, Pete Lacaba as an old utility boy, Marra PL Lanot as one of the town's moralists, Hector Macaso and Ickay Eusebio as the richest people in the village, and Bombi Plata as the scheming assistant director.

Introducing commercial model Rapunzel Hernandez and Monet dela Cruz in very significant roles, the film also features cameo appearances by Ronnie Lazaro, Joel Torre, Kris Lacaba, Odyssey Flores, Topel Lee, Rox Lee, Khavn De La Cruz, Norman Wilwayco, Ogi Sugatan, EJ Salcedo, Donald Camon, Jon Red, and other personalities in the local digital filmmaking scene.

Sanchez worked as a scriptwriter in Erik Matti's "Kagat ng Dilim" for Viva TV and "Darating ang Umaga" for ABS-CBN. He also wrote scripts and stories for Viva Films ("Alas-Dose"), Imus Productions ("Kilabot at Kembot" and "Bertud ng Putik"), and Regal Films ("Prosti").

Aside from "Lasponggols," Sanchez also penned and helmed "Ang Anak ni Brocka," a finalist in the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival 2005. He also wrote Topel Lee's entry "Dilim" which will open the event on July 8 at SM Megamall. In addition, he also directed the music videos for Sugarfree's "Hari ng Sablay," which won in the recent Awit Awards, Hale's "The Day You Said Good Night," and Kyla's "Till They Take My Heart Away," among others.

"Lasponggols" will be shown on July 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Experimental Theater); July 14 at 10 a.m. at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater); July 16 at 10 p.m. at the CCP Little Theater; and July 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the CCP Bulwagang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining (MKP Multi-Purpose Hall). It had a jam-packed sneak preview at the CCP Dream Theater last June 17. (PR)
